What are RDS CALs for?
Each person who opens a Remote Desktop session on the server needs an access licence.
- Per user: one user, as many devices as needed.
- RD Licensing server: a free Windows Server role.
- Windows Server licence: also required, not included.

Activate the key in four steps
Install the Licensing role
On Windows Server 2022, through Server Manager.
Activate the licence server
Right-click the server in RD Licensing Manager, then Activate.
Install the licences
Install Licenses wizard, programme “License Pack (Retail Purchase)”, then the key you received.
Point the session host
Specify this licence server and “Per User” mode.
Do these licences work on Server 2019?
RDS 2022 CALs cover Windows Server 2022 hosts and earlier versions.
Do I also need Windows Server CALs?
Yes, each user also needs a Windows Server access licence.
