Activation error 0xC004F074: what to do
Code 0xC004F074 means no Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted. It appears when Windows or Office tries to activate a volume key, designed for a company’s servers. Check the key type: a key bought individually should activate directly with Microsoft.
What the message says
The error usually reads: “The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. No Key Management Service (KMS) could be contacted.” A KMS server is an internal service a company installs to activate its machines in bulk.
Why it appears
- The key you entered is a KMS (volume) key: it only activates against a KMS server. A standalone PC has none.
- The PC is looking for a company KMS server: it is still set up for business activation, for example a former work PC.
- The PC’s date or time is wrong: activation fails whatever the key type.
Checks to make
- Date, time and connection: correct the date and time, and check the PC can reach the Internet.
- Key type on Windows: open Command Prompt as administrator and type
slmgr /dlv. The “Description” line shows the channel: if it contains “VOLUME_KMSCLIENT”, the key is a volume key. - Key type on Office: type
cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\ospp.vbs" /dstatus(the path may vary depending on the installation); the licence name shows the channel. - Re-enter the key: for Windows,
slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEYthenslmgr /ato. For Office, open an app and enter the key in the activation window.
If the key is a volume key
A volume key is not meant to activate on a single PC. If you bought your key from Licenciel, reply to the delivery email with a screenshot of the error: a technician checks the key and sends you a replacement key or refunds you (our guarantees).
